Psychological Therapies
A wide range of psychological therapies are integrated in my work, to help individuals and families receive the kind of support they need, when they need it. Some of these are systemic therapy and family therapy, solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, couples therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), ReAttach and nonviolent resistance therapy (NVR).

It is important to realise that therapists are facilitators of change; they do not ‘know everything’ about the client, nor do they alone ‘know’ exactly what a client requires – the person’s own knowledge about themselves can be activated in therapy, and this includes re-connecting them with their own individual or family strengths and resources. These are the resources that may not have been available to a person when they needed them the most, but by working in collaboration with one another, a therapist and their client can together develop solutions to some of the most pressing challenges the person faces. My interest includes working to help overcome negative effects from all forms of trauma and the experience of interpersonal abuse. I also like to work towards dealing constructively with a wide array of difficulties that may have had their origins in injustice, difficulties in the social environment’s response to one’s neurodivergence, or simply misfortune that has led to emotional difficulties.
Clinical Supervision and Consultation
I have been providing clinical supervision to individual colleagues and teams for over 30 years. My supervision practice is informed by the therapeutic approaches I use. When practitioners learn to work within a certain approach, they often feel the need to focus on certain ways of communicating, at the expense of others they would intuitively practice.
My aim in supervision is to support colleagues in re-integrating their various kinds of knowledge and skill into a coherent and increasingly accomplished way of working with clients, including those who may be among those who struggle the most. While trauma- and attachment informed, within a social constructionist framework, my overall approach to supervision is systemic, narrative and oriented towards resource, interpersonal connectedness and facilitating growth, rather than ‘repair’.

A key area for supervision is NVR, which I introduced to the UK about 25 years ago. Within this approach, I have developed trauma-oriented and child-focused ways ways of working, which are represented in various journal publications and my latest book (Jakob, P., 2024: Nonviolent Resistance in Trauma-focused Practice. A Systemic Approach to Therapy and Social Care. Routledge.
